Last week, we were delighted to welcome researchers and museum professionals to the Society for a ‘hands-on’ workshop with ‘untethered objects’ in our Collections, organised in partnership with Culture&.
This workshop marks the beginning of an ongoing collaboration between Culture& and the Royal Geographical Society as part of Reimagining Museums, a Wellcome-funded research project under the ANTITHESES platform at the University of Oxford.Dr Chloe Asker, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Culture&
Participants viewed original artefacts from the African section of our Collections - for which there is little or no surviving provenance information - and learned more about the original makers and users of these objects.
They also had the wonderful opportunity to take photographs and make sketches, which were then turned into 2D or 3D artistic responses, using different craft materials.
The project aims to develop and test new tools and methodologies for addressing polarisation and ethical disagreement within museum and collections practice. We look forward to convening future events with the RGS that build on the conversations and insights from this workshop, strengthening our shared commitment to tackling ethical disagreement and polarisation surrounding contested and untethered objects.Dr Chloe Asker, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Culture&
