Connor is a GIS Analyst for Fera Science Ltd, working to create 'opportunity maps' to explore how public organisations and land owners can increase the biodiversity of their land. He has a BSc in Geology/Earth Science from UWE.

About

I am a geospatial and cartographical professional with 5 years of experience working in sectors ranging from military strategy to food safety and biodiversity (where I currently am) and also for Domino's Pizza!

Preferences

  • Location: Yorkshire and the North East
  • Availability: daytime, evening, in person, online
  • Key stage: KS4 and KS5
  • Themes: cities, environment, fieldwork, GIS, drones

Current or most recent role

I create opportunity maps for clients ranging from farmers, to housing developers to stately homes to asses their Biodiversity Net Gain and Natural Capital. The maps allow them to see where on their land they could plant hedgerows, trees or encourage wild meadows to increase biodiversity.

I am also a qualified drone pilot, and source imagery for clients.

Previous experience

I've networked at numerous conferences, and I was a student ambassador at university.

Why I want to become a professional ambassador

I want to give back and inspire the new generation to consider geography as a career as many people aren't aware of where studying geography will lead. and there are plenty of avenues to explore that get you in the countryside, or doing something really quite cool.

Types of activities

  • Talking about current job and career pathway
  • Running activities about my career sector and the opportunities available; talking about what geographical skills I use at work and how geography is used in the 'real world'
  • Inspiring young people to choose geography
  • Classroom based activities or working with small groups of students to talk about career options
  • Supporting fieldwork and opportunities outside of the classroom
