During the sixth World Landslide Forum (November 2023) British Geological Survey was announced, alongside 15 other institutes, as a World Centre of Excellence on landslide risk reduction. During the forum 6 key thematic areas of landslide research were identified: Monitoring and early warning, modelling, hazard and risk assessment, mitigation techniques, triggering mechanisms, and climate change. These themes will form the basis of the talk regarding the work of the British Geological Surveys Landslide team.

The talk will begin with a general overview of the triggering mechanisms of landslides followed by a summary of the landslide situation in Great Britain. The talk will then focus on BGS activities relevant to the 6 key research areas identified at the Forum. This will include case studies of recent work on national scale landslide hazard and risk assessment (Nepal, Malawi), modelling climate change impact on debris flow susceptibility, monitoring landslides from space using EO data, emerging monitoring technologies (e.g. Internet of Things) as well as techniques being developed to exploit the potential of social media for data collection.

Speakers: Cath Pennington, Alessandro Novellino, Nikhil Nedumpallile Vasu and Claire Dashwood. Chair: Hannah Jordan.

This is a joint event with the British Geological Survey and the Disaster Risk Management Professional Practice Group.
