Explore 50 is both a celebration of what has been achieved and an invitation to look ahead. As the challenges facing our world grow ever more complex, the need for thoughtful, inclusive, and impactful exploration has never been greater.
Join us as we celebrate 50 years of Explore and help shape the next 50 years of geographical exploration. Here's a taste of what you can look forward to during the afternoon's celebrations.
Hidden histories: Collections in focus
Join us in the Society’s Foyle Reading Room for a rare opportunity to view the Society’s Collections up close. Specially selected for Explore 50, this display brings together objects, maps, journals, photographs, and artefacts that tell the story of exploration across generations.
Behind the scenes: A guided tour of Lowther Lodge
Explore the rooms where expeditions have been planned, research supported, and knowledge shared for generations. Along the way, discover how past expeditions continue to live on within building, from the Everest model used to plan the successful 1953 ascent, to the portraits and pulks displayed in the Polar Hall that speak to the enduring legacy of polar exploration.
Afternoon tea
In the spirit of Explore, this informal gathering celebrates the importance of community, recognising that some of the most meaningful outcomes of exploration begin with a simple conversation.
