Global Governance: an A Level journey

Global governance is the system of norms, rules, laws, and institutions such as the UN and WTO that manage issues affecting our world, fostering cooperation between nations, corporations, and NGOs to address shared challenges such as climate change, trade, or pandemics.

Governance influences global flows of people, money, ideas, and resources, and impacts all scales from the local to the global. It involves steering human activity beyond national borders through collective decision-making, shaping economic stability, social equality, and environmental protection.

The topic is a key element of both the AQA (Section 3.2.1) and Edexcel (Dynamic Places unit) A Level specifications and is therefore especially relevant to all A Level geographers, whether in Year 12 or 13, and also to those studying related subjects. 

About the speaker

Our speaker, Professor Emma Mawdsley, will talk to this topic with specific reference to its relevance for A Level students. She is Head of Geography at the University of Cambridge and teaches on Global Development Futures, and the Geographies of Hope.

Professor Mawdsley’s research includes work on environmental and regional politics in India, middle class environmentalisms in the majority world, South-South development cooperation, and the changing geographies of foreign aid.
