Join your local regional committee
If you’re looking for a way to support geography and the Society, why not join your regional committee and get involved in organising events and activities in your area?
Our regional committees support the Society in sharing geographical insights with wider audiences.
We need your help to plan and deliver a seasonal programme of local events that showcase a breadth of knowledge, inspire others, and bring people together under a shared interest in people, places and environments.
If you have an idea for an event, or simply want to be part of a group who champion geography in your local region, apply now.
What do our regional committees do?
Each of our regional committees plays an integral role in helping to promote geography to their local communities and champion the discipline on behalf of the Society.
We have regional committees across England, Northern Ireland and Wales, which are managed by groups of local volunteers. We also have international branches based in Hong Kong and Singapore, developed by local Fellows.
Our regional committees are friendly and knowledgeable and are always happy to welcome new faces and the new ideas they bring.
Why volunteer on your local committee?
- Meet like-minded people who share your passion for geography
- Enjoy flexible volunteering commitments
- Represent and connect with your local community
- Develop new skills and knowledge with the support of Society staff and fellow volunteers
- Use your experience and enthusiasm to make a positive impact

- Support the Society’s strategic work and help with Society’s projects.
- Gain event management and marketing skills.
- Develop communication and public speaking skills.
- Travel and other expenses reimbursed for event organiser.
What will you be doing?
Our regional committees exist to:
- Promote the aims of the Society and contribute to the delivery of the Society’s strategy.
- Share geographical knowledge through public events, such as talks, field visits and debates.
- Deliver a programme of events that meets the needs and interests of their local communities, including Fellows, Members, students, and the public.
- Provide Fellows and Members based across the regions with the opportunity to meet and create new connections furthering geography and all it stands for.
- Showcase the geography and geographers based in their region.
- Inspire the next generation of geographers.
- Engage with everyone with an enthusiasm for and interest in geography, travel and exploration.
As a committee member, you will help fulfil these goals through delivering the regional programme of events and being a positive ambassador for the Society as well as the discipline of geography.
The committees do not have a formal structure and have developed different ways to deliver their programmes. Most committees have a designated Chair and committee members. Some committee members will have a specific role such as Treasurer or other responsibilities may include publicity and marketing, links with specific organisations or subject areas.
What are we looking for?
People are at the heart of the Society and with the dedication and support of our regional committees we have been able to develop a thriving community across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
