The release of the 2025 English Indices of Deprivation (IoD) on 30 October 2025 offers an unrivalled opportunity to explore the contemporary geographies of deprivation in England.
This IoD release is the first since COVID-19 and the first in the context of the current cost of living crisis. The IoD provides neighbourhood-level measures of multiple forms of deprivation and will be an invaluable tool for local authorities, NGOs, and others concerned with tackling spatial inequalities.
This webinar introduces the IoD and considers how deprivation varies between and within regions, local authorities, and neighbourhoods. Building on the Nuffield Foundation funded 'Trajectories of Deprivation in the UK' project, the webinar explores deprivation histories for small areas across England.
Linking previous Indices of Deprivation releases from 2004 to 2025, this webinar outlines how deprivation trajectories differ across England.
The presentation concludes by outlining several recommendations for the use of the IoD 2025 in shaping policy interventions and argues considering deprivation histories is crucial for the design and implementation of schemes aimed at reducing spatial inequalities.
