This event continues the North West regional committee's annual summer series with the Wainwright Society. Rooted firmly in Wainwright territory, we will make an exploration on foot into the Northern Fells, where only Binsey lies further north.

These landscapes beyond the Lakes volcanics, deep in Skiddaw range’s sedimentary slate, and cut by water and the Cumbrian Way, are now a vast ocean of upland, where the “loneliest house in England” is anchored, alone.

This walk will also consider the ambitious rewilding proposals for Skiddaw Forest, a predominantly treeless tract of fell, moor and dale – watched over by Carrock Fell’s ancient hill fort, and our summit goal for this upland round – a future stronghold for Nature’s increase, here, and beneath, already peregrine stooped skies, set in Lakeland’s northern backlands.

About the leader

The walk will be led by Phil Houghton, North West (Cumbria and Lancashire) regional committee member.
