A one-day course for trainers with relevant previous experience in managing a wide range of visits in the UK and overseas who wish to deliver the Off-site safety managementcourse to their own groups.
The OSSM training the trainer course is designed for those working with both young people and adults where they are required to plan, manage and evaluate off-site safety policies, procedures and activities for visits both in the UK and abroad. It is particularly appropriate for teachers, lecturers, trainers and youth workers who are seeking to develop their knowledge and skills in safety management.
It is also relevant to those training personnel taking part in venture that are compliant with British Standard, BS 8848 - the specification for the provision of visits, fieldwork, expeditions, and adventurous activities, outside the United Kingdom.
This course is for those who have previously completed the two day OSSM course and have the competences required to become OSSM trainers. OSSM trainers should already have extensive expedition or fieldwork experience and be able to show training and/or teaching skills.
Course content
OSSM trainers are required to guide delegates through a course that will develop skills in:
- Planning the programme and administration for an off-site visit/event effectively.
- Identifying and working within the legal framework surrounding off-site activities.
- Assessing the needs of a group and identifying the necessary staffing.
- Undertaking reviews of safety requirements and risk assessments.
- Outlining the key requirements relating to group safety during an activity.
- Identifying appropriate actions and procedures to deal with both minor and major incidents.
- Identifying key elements of an effective post-event evaluation report.
- Preparing post-event evaluations for a specified audience.
In order to make the course more widely available, the Society offers this one day Training the trainer course for those who have previously undertaken the two day Off-site safety management course and have the competences required to become OSSM trainers. It is hoped that candidates will be keen to either offer the Off-site safety management course from their own training establishments or act as freelance trainers for the Society.
