This event will begin with the showing a short film on a fisheries success story from Liberia. Stephen will describe the state of the world’s fisheries, illustrating a highly varied picture, highlighting success stories and areas of most concern.
His talk will also cover how the push for marine conservation areas has fared and the importance of consumer awareness and behaviour – with practical advice on the fish you can eat in support of a sustainable industry.
With both Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft in our Eastern Region, the pressure on important fisheries is an issue on our doorstep. Have the lessons been learnt, and what more needs to be done?
About the speaker
Stephen Akester was a founding director of Macalister Elliott, the global fisheries consultants. He has advised national governments, FAO and the World Bank on fisheries in West Africa, the Horn of Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and the South Asia.
