Dr Lia Kajiki is a Brazilian biologist, Ornithologist, and National Geographic Explorer, with an insatiable curiosity about how nature works and finding solutions rooted in a community-driven approach to protect biodiversity.
She obtained her PhD in Ecology from the University of Brasilia, and her research experience, which focused mostly on investigating birds in the Neotropics, spans 15 years of leading research and conservation activities in the region, including the Amazon forest, Atlantic forest, and Cerrado biomes.
Kajiki strongly believes in the power of education and the paramount role of local communities in the conservation and protection of biodiversity. This led her to engage in various conservation projects with local communities.
Currently, she runs the Amazon Charitable Trust, a London-based NGO supporting the 'ribeirinhos' (river-dwellers) of the Lower Rio Branco-Jauaperi River region and the protection of an area nearly the size of Belgium deep in the Brazilian Amazon.
