Sofia is a British-Mexican marine conservationist and science communicator. She holds a PhD in Zoology and an MSc in Biodiversity, Conservation and Management from the University of Oxford, as well as an AB in Biology and Photojournalism from Brown University.
Her academic research spans the role of humour in conservation, marine ecology, stakeholder collaboration and wellbeing in the conservation sector. In 2024, she was awarded a prize for Excellence in Science Communication by Schmidt Sciences and the National Academies of Sciences.
Sofia produces a range of creative work such as writing published in Current Conservation and The New York Times, award-winning stop motion animations, and an improvised comedy show about endangered species.
She is currently a Senior Teaching Fellow at Royal Holloway, University of London.
