Carl is Associate Professor in tourism at Swansea University as well as Professor at the University of Highlands and Islands, Scotland.

Always a geographer and explorer at heart, his research focusses on experiences and development in adventure tourism and ecotourism. He has written over fifty papers and book chapters, is co-author of Marine Ecotourism: Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea (CABI, 2007) co-editor of the Encyclopaedia of Sustainable Tourism (CABI, 2015), and the forthcoming Routledge Handbook of Adventure Tourism (2023). Dr Cater has travelled to over 80 countries and has undertaken field research, supervision and teaching worldwide, including Australia, Azerbaijan, China, Nepal, New Zealand, Norway, Papua New Guinea, Tibet and Vanuatu.

He is a qualified pilot, diver, lifesaver, mountain and tropical forest leader, and maintains an interest in both the practice and pursuit of sustainable outdoor tourism. He is co-founder of the Adventure Tourism Research Association (ATRA) and is on the editorial board of several tourism journals.
