Professor Andrew Power
Professor Andrew Power is Professor of Human Geography at the University of Southampton, where his research focuses on the geographies of care, disability, housing and social inclusion. His work explores how systems of care and support shape everyday life, with particular attention to the spatial, material and relational dimensions of home and community for disabled people.
Andrew’s research examines the tensions inherent in care: how it can enable autonomy and belonging, while also structuring time, space and power in ways that may constrain those who rely on it. He has recently coordinated a special issue on the theme of 'Home Making at the Margins,' in which his co-produced research on shared housing for adults with intellectual disabilities.
This work highlights the embodied labour of care, and the ways in which support practices co-produce place. His work is grounded in collaborative and participatory approaches, informed by the principle “nothing about us without us,” and seeks to centre the lived experiences of disabled people within research and policy debates.
He has led and contributed to a range of interdisciplinary projects across the UK and Ireland, working with community organisations, practitioners and policymakers to better understand how care is organised, valued and experienced.
His research has been published widely in leading journals in social and human geography and has contributed to debates in disability studies, urban studies and social policy.
Alongside his research, Andrew is committed to teaching and doctoral supervision in social geographies, and to supporting inclusive and engaged geographical scholarship. His work speaks to broader questions about interdependence, social justice and the making of more inclusive places.
