The three-day RGS-IBG Annual International Conference attracts over 2000 geographers from around the world. This year, the conference is taking place online, with in-person elements if it is possible to do so.
Registration for the conference is now open. We are planning for a largely virtual conference with an in-person core. The in-person elements will be plenary and journal sponsored lectures (which will also be streamed to the online platform), with a small number of additional workshops and sessions.
While we currently believe we will be able to deliver some in-person sessions under current UK government guidance, it remains unclear how far we will be able to expand capacity for in-person attendance beyond those participating directly in these sessions. We hope to be clearer on this after 21 June, when further UK government announcements about restrictions will be made.
For this reason, all delegates are being asked to register now using our online rates (see below for details and a link to booking). Everyone who is listed on the conference programme and who wishes to participate in the conference will need to register and pay in full by Friday 9 July. Those who have not registered by the date will be removed from the programme.
Later, when it is clearer how many can attend in person, we will be asking those who wish to attend in-person to pay an additional supplement (we expect this to be £48/day for RGS-IBG members and £54/day for non-members) to cover the direct costs of running the in-person events.
If you require a single receipt for your conference registration listing all costs we will be able to provide this.

The fees have been set to cover our direct costs of running the event. These are carefully costed and set on a cost-recovery basis.
We welcome attendance and participation from all members of the geographical and related communities/disciplines and other interested parties.
The online delegate registration fee includes access to all online sessions and recordings, and streamed plenary and journal sponsored lectures.
There are discounted fees available for Society Fellows and members - find out more about our special joining offer for conference attendees below.
Given the content and nature of the annual conference, most student attendees are ordinarily at postgraduate level. If you are a student who is under 18 and are interested in participating in the conference, please contact the conference organisers at email@example.com to discuss this before registering.
Please contact the conference organisers with any questions: email firstname.lastname@example.org or telephone +44 (0)20 7591 3027.
Bookings for this event are non-refundable unless a medical certificate or similar evidence can be produced.
If an AC delegate does cancel their booking by producing a medical certificate or similar evidence, cancellations made up to four weeks in advance will incur a £30 administration fee, and cancellations made thereafter will incur a £60 fee. We cannot give any refunds for cancellations made less than seven days before, during, or after the event.
If the Society is unable to deliver the in-person element, then that supplement will be fully refundable by the Society to the delegate.
International delegates, or those who are not working in geography departments, may be eligible for a Research Group guest registration if their conference session is sponsored by one of the Society's affiliated Research Groups and/or if they meet other eligibility criteria. Research Group guests receive complimentary registration for the online conference or for one or more days of conference, at the invitation of the Research Group and the conference organisers. Assistance with travel and accommodation costs is not included. In 2019 we supported 35 colleagues to attend the conference through the Research Group guest registration scheme, including academics from the Global South and colleagues from outside academia, including artists and those working in policy and the third sector.
Research Group guest registrations are very limited in number and over-subscribed every year. Delegates should contact their session convenor and the chair of the relevant Research Group for more information.
The Research Group guest registration scheme is now open. Applications must be submitted by Research Groups by Friday 28 May 2021. If you have any questions please contact us.
