Find out about geography at Ulster University

Ulster University offers the following outreach and engagement opportunities for schools, students and teachers:

Teacher CPD and pupil resources

GeoTopics began at Ulster University in 2019 and has become a highly respected annual event. GeoTopics aligns excellent research work with core topics on school curricula. Ulster University staff present their research to post-primary school teachers on a range of geographical topics such as coasts, rivers, conflict, GIS, marine systems and sustainable settlements. GeoTopics is a free, one-day event for teachers to learn about ongoing research, acquire resources, develop skills, network and learn more about the courses being taught at Ulster University.

Student placements and Geography Ambassador visits

Undergraduate students with an interest in teaching are keen to acquire year-long placement in both primary and post-primary schools. This is a popular option that enables classrooms to learn new skills, particularly in GIS and other technologies. Their students can also visit schools for a few hours or a few days as Geography Ambassadors to give talks on careers from geography, how GIS can be used and other relevant activities.

Open Days and Campus Tours

Ulster University realises that students may have queries about studying geography, environmental science or marine science there and are very happy to help. They run an applicant event each February which is designed to help answer questions while allowing prospective students the opportunity to meet Ulster University staff and students. They also run Open Days in September. If you wish to visit the campus at an alternative time, they are happy to discuss this with you.

Queries about studying at Ulster University

They are happy to arrange a phone call, or Teams chat, with teachers, parents or students. Alternatively, they can also link you up with a current student to find out about their experiences at Ulster University. Brochures are available on request and they also have student videos available on their YouTube channel.

Widening Access and Community Engagement
