The University of Exeter offers the following outreach and engagement opportunities for schools, students and teachers through Exeter geography (Streatham campus in Exeter):
Geography Outreach Talks
The department offers either in-person or virtual talks to schools delivered by current staff within the Exeter geography department. These talks are about current geography research with the option to include discussion about the Exeter geography degree programmes and related opportunities. As part of their widening participation commitment, they prioritise working with non-fee-paying schools.
If you are interested in arranging a talk please email GeographyStreathamWP@exeter.ac.uk
There are also a series of centrally organised outreach events and activities with geography focused streams:
Exeter Scholars Programme
Exeter Scholars is a free programme providing students (years 10-13) with the opportunity to find out more about university, develop a passion for a chosen subject, and gain first-hand experience of student life at the University of Exeter. There are different pathways within this programme: South West based, nationwide, and virtual. This is a centrally organised programme with a geography subject option which provides students with the chance to engage with both human geography and physical geography ideas and practices. There are also benefit packages associated with completing the Exeter Scholars Programme. This programme has certain eligibility requirements as this is part of their widening participation work. Within the Scholars Programme there are different pathways which have an associated geography stream:
South West Pathway
The South West Pathway is for students who live in Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Bristol, and Dorset. It is an opportunity to develop knowledge of what it is like to study geography at university level. The majority of the sessions take place on the Streatham campus with an optional session held at the Penryn campus (Cornwall). There is also a fieldtrip activity within the geography stream which enables students to practice and learn about geographical phenomena in a different environment. The activities for each subject activity strand have been put together to support all Exeter Scholars participants in realising their potential to excel in higher education and achieving their long-term goals. Content delivered within the geography stream changes each year but past activities have explored: migration, place-based attachments, commodity chains, plant identification, and wildfires.
Nationwide Pathway
This is a residential pathway for Year 12 students based outside of the south west of England (Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Bristol, and Dorset). The sessions are taught via a mixture of lectures, seminars, and practical group work classes. The residential experience also gives students the chance to explore the local area, develop cooking skills, try out study societies, and find out what student life might be like. Currently geography is situated within the history and humanities subject strand where students develop transferable skills such as critical reasoning, communication, research, imaginative thinking and problem-solving techniques.
