The University of St Andrews offers the following outreach and engagement opportunities for schools, students and teachers:

Ambassadors programme

The University of St Andrews runs an active Student Ambassador scheme, where current undergraduate students can share their knowledge and experience to motivate and encourage other young people to consider higher education. Student ambassadors are organised by subject, and support variety of student experience and outreach activities, including visiting days, virtual sessions and widening participation programmes. Ambassadors also support a variety of events for faculties and service units across the University. Find out more

Careers fairs

The University of St Andrews engages—through the Scottish Association for Geosciences, Environment and Society (SAGES)---in various career fairs across Scotland. Please contact SAGES or T.J. Young for details.  

Subject workshops and taster lectures

The School of Geography and Sustainable Development currently offers taster lectures as part of the University’s annual Offer Holder Day, and workshops as part of the University’s secondary school programmes in widening access

Visits to and from schools

The University of St Andrews actively engages with primary and secondary schools in the Tayside area (Fife, Dundee, Angus, and Perth). Many of the University’s's researchers and students actively visit primary and secondary schools to give talks or run workshops, as well as invite nearby schools to the University for workshops. Please contact the University or School at gsdadmissions@st-andrews.ac.uk to discuss the potential for a visit.

Partnership with the Polar Academy

The School of Geography and Sustainable Development partners with the Polar Academy Scotland, delivering a series of workshops in climate science and a mentorship programme to establish a pathway for high school students that have experienced interruptions to their studies to pursue and access higher education. Open days

The University of St Andrews hosts visiting days during the academic year, where prospective students can learn more about the subjects on offer at St Andrews, their student experience and the application process. Visiting days are held both in-person and virtually (online) and booking in advance is required. The dates of the upcoming visiting days can be found through the University’s dedicated website.

Undergraduate offer holder days

The University of St Andrews annually hosts an offer holder day in April, where applicants that have received an offer to study at the University get a deeper insight into life at the university. Find out more

Summer schools

The School of Geography and Sustainable Development engages with multiple summer schools run at the University of St Andrews at secondary school level, most of which are part of the University’s Widening Access and Participation strategy. Find out more

UK-wide: Prospective students fulfilling certain access-related criteria are encouraged to apply to study geography through the University’s Sutton Trust Summer School. Find out more

Scotland: The School delivers workshops through multiple University-run programmes, including Access to Rural Communities, LEAPS, Focus West, and First Chances Fife. Please get in touch with your secondary school’s staff representative to find out if your school participates in one of these programmes.

Scholarships, funding and opportunities

Scholarships to study geography at undergraduate level are allocated centrally by the University, who offer a searchable catalogue of funding options. These options are offered by the University and, in some cases, external partners towards fees, living expenses, travel and maintenance, as well as projects and initiatives. Find out more
