About Brendan

Brendan has over thirty years’ experience as geography teacher, head of department, pastoral lead and author. He has taught geography in three maintained schools and one independent school and led his current department to become a Geographical Association Centre of Excellence.

Brendan is Royal Geographical Society Chartered Geographer (Teacher). He has a wealth of experience in the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in schools and supporting other schools e.g. training in GIS; ITT and ECF; supporting primary and secondary networks. c is a member of the Geographical Association Special Interest Group for ICT, which focuses strongly on geospatial education. Recent projects include writing and presenting lessons for Oak National Academy and Tutor2U, script writing for BBC Bitesize Geography and Erasmus Plus ‘GI Pedagogy’. Brendan has presented at several national conferences including the Geographical Assocation and researchED.

Support is offered for the following Key Stages:

Primary: KS2
Secondary: KS3, KS4 (GCSE); A Level

What can Brendan offer to schools?

  • GIS (including remote sensing).
  • Teaching with and about GIS.
  • Practical advice about curriculum sequencing and progression with GIS.
  • How to make GIS ‘part of the furniture’ (KS2, KS3, GCSE and A Level) including training and resources using ArcGIS Online, Digimap for Schools, National Library of Scotland Maps, Esri Wayback etc.
  • ITT and ECT training; GIS in fieldwork including NEA.

Format of sessions

Brendan is happy to run both online and in person support.

He would be willing to travel anywhere in the country or even overseas depending on availability, but it would be easiest to arrange in person support in south-east England, including the London area. If a school is able to pay expenses that would always be appreciated.

Brendan would be happy to provide a range of support commensurate with his experience, including authoring, resource writing, multimedia work and also advocacy or representation for the geographical education community to educational providers, professional organisations and government e.g. Government Digital Service.
