About Martin
Martin is currently a Lecturer in Disaster Management at the University of Manchester. He has interests in physical landscape, multi hazard risk, hazard perception, and disaster risk education. He also creates simulations for students and teaches GIS. He also teaches Environmental Science (for the Open University) and is currently the Chief Examiner for AQA Environmental Science Specification.
Martin has 20 years' experience as a secondary school teacher and has led multiple geography departments. He used to write GCSE and A Level Geography examinations for Pearson.
Currently Martin is keen to develop the links between higher education and secondary education. He would love to work with secondary schools to develop their resources and produce material which would benefit all students, particuarly on the themes of disaster management and climate change.
Support is offered for the following Key Stages:
- Martin works primarily with secondary schools (KS3-KS5) but has conducted talks in primary schools (KS2).
- Normally Martin runs simulations with students from the end of KS3 to KS5.
- Martin is happy to talk to individual schools about their needs.
What can Martin offer to schools?
- Curriculum development and design: Martin is happy to work with schools to develop their geography curriculum. His strengths are hazards, risk, physical geography and climate change.
- Resources: Martin is particularly interested in developing resources for schools.
- GIS: Martin also teaches GIS and is happy to help schools develop some introductory approaches to mapping and GIS.
- Talks to teachers and students: Martin runs a programme of talks with schools and is happy to attend schools to deliver information to students or teachers.
- Simulations: One of Martin's main outputs is to create simulations / role plays – where students can participate to learn more about disaster risk. These are participatory and focus on other skills such as decision making, mapping, collaboration, design, and presentation.
- Sharing experience: Martin is happy to work with schools to share his experience in examining and curriculum design.
- Environmental Science: If you teach Environmental Science Martin would be happy to offer advice on this.
Format of sessions
Martin is willing to travel to schools (to run disaster simulations, deliver in-person activities and talks).
Martin is happy to work with schools, teachers or students online.
Pricing
Martin's travel expenses would need to be covered for in-person sessions (based in South-East).
Martin generally does not charge for single days / talks or activities. However longer interactions with schools would come at a daily rate.
Other consultancy services offered by Martin
Martin is very happy to work on multimedia work and has completed filming in his various roles. He also produces podcasts and would be happy to work with school colleagues on these, especially around examples of disasters.
Martin is also happy to work on authoring (time permitting).
