About Jonathan
Jonathan has been a teacher for nearly 30 years and has extensive experience of teaching Geography at Key Stages 3-5 as well as outreach work for Key Stage 2 when he was an Advanced Skills Teacher. He has very extensive experience of teaching A Level Geography and Post-16 leadership (having led large Sixth Forms for nearly 15 Years). He also has experience of working with trainee teachers, both in school and in his work in Initial Teacher Training.
He attained FRGS and CGeog (Teacher) recognition in 2007 and has mentored RGS members on their journey to achieving FRGS and CGeog. He has also been a Head of MFL as well as having been a Head of Geography and Head of Humanities. He has a Masters Degree in Education and also holds the NPQH as well as being a Founding Member and Fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching (FCCT). In recent years, he has opted to work part-time. This has including leading the Geography team, and being Careers Leader and a Senior Tutor at the school where he was Deputy Headteacher (Head of Sixth Form) for 11 years, in the Ribble Valley. Working part-time has allowed him to spend more time pursuing other professional interests, including some Visiting Lecturer work with the University of Chester as well as spending more time in the hills and dales.

What can Jonathan offer to schools?
- OS Map reading sessions: practical activities for all key stages, to help learners to overcome the fear of maps and get them using them. Lots of fun and learning to be had!
- Using Digimap for Schools: a simple and effective GIS that’s accessible for all and helps learners to get to grips with this great geography resource.
- Fieldwork on the school fields and in the local vicinity: Practical ideas to get learners engaged in Geography fieldwork and to support Geography teachers in developing sessions and activities – including apps that can support fieldwork.
- Planning effective GCSE and A Level field trips: focusing on getting the most out of these field trips to engage learners and empower them for their exams and their NEA.
- The ‘What’ and the ‘So What’: how to write evaluatively as a geographer – session aimed at A Level geographers writing evaluatively to access higher mark bands.
- Curriculum planning: support in developing your Geography curriculum, including embedding assessment. Also, support for combined humanities Key Stage 3 programmes.
- Geography leadership CPD: individual support and training for current/aspiring Geography leaders.
- Geography subject knowledge updates: offering a wide range of topics, including individual requests, across Key Stages 2-5.
- Support with the A Level Geography NEA/Independent Investigation (especially, but not exclusively, for the Eduqas exam board).
- Sixth Form leadership and development: bespoke support for Post-16 leaders, including those new in post and aspiring Sixth Form leaders.
- UCAS and Oxbridge preparation: helping students and teachers to understand the UCAS and Oxbridge application process. Bespoke support including interview preparation and guidance is also available – for all subjects.
- Extended Project Qualification: support and advice on leading and managing the EPQ qualification - (especially, but not exclusively, for the AQA exam board).
- Embedding Careers Education in your curriculum: Meeting the requirements of the Gatsby benchmarks in your subject area.
- Bespoke sessions: Jonathan is happy to discuss any individual bespoke sessions not covered in the above examples.
Format of sessions
Jonathan is happy to run sessions online or in-person. Online sessions on Teams/Zoom similar platforms can work very well. He is very happy to provide support to colleagues across the world in this way.
Jonathan usually travels from the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, where he lives, to locations in Lancashire, North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Cumberland and Westmorland and Furness.
Travel expenses would usually need to be covered for longer distances. Jonathan is also willing to travel to regions further afield. Please get in touch to discuss.
Pricing
Jonathan’s daily rate is typically £250 - £300 for a full day, depending on the specific details. Shorter sessions will be agreed on an individual basis.
Face-to-face sessions will, usually, require transport costs to be covered, depending on the journey time.
