What can Tom offer to schools?

Tom’s expertise spans curriculum and resource development, fieldwork, departmental leadership, and teacher development through instructional coaching / mentoring.

As a consultant, Tom offers support in the following areas:

  • Curriculum design and development: Tom can support the development of spiral geography curriculums that embed core geographical knowledge, making them knowledge rich, while spacing key themes and concepts across courses and year groups. His approach supports deep learning, recall and application—whether within the KS3 Curriculum, IGCSE, A Level, or IB.
  • Fieldwork expertise: Tom has led fieldwork in a diverse range of countries and can support departments in planning safe, purposeful, and specification-aligned fieldwork. He has particular expertise in delivering international fieldwork in complex or challenging locations (environmentally e.g. a rainforest or in terms of having particular cultural / political considerations).
  • Assessment and academic success: With a strong track record of high achievement at International A Levels and IB, Tom supports departments in effective differentiation, assessment design, and preparing students for top-grade success, teaching to the top and scaffolding upwards. He is an experienced examiner, more recently for IBDP Geography, and can offer insight into marking, moderation and exam-readiness. He currently teaches International A-Level Geography and IGCSE for Cambridge and can guide departments in international schools and or UK schools that offer these courses or plan to.
  • Theory of Knowledge and synoptic integration: For IB schools, Tom can guide the integration of Theory of Knowledge (ToK) into geography teaching, and support students in making conceptual and cross-topic links. He is also able to advise A Level teams on embedding synoptic thinking.
  • International school middle leadership: Tom has held middle leadership roles in a variety of international contexts and is well-versed in the demands of running geography or broader humanities departments abroad. He offers advice on teaching development, curriculum mapping, resourcing, and interdisciplinary planning, and understands the complexities of working with diverse teams and student bodies.
  • Mentoring and professional development: Passionate about teacher development, and having completed Instructional Coaching qualifications, Tom offers online coaching / mentorship to geography teachers seeking to grow their confidence, subject knowledge, or classroom practice. He is available for online and East / South East Asian in-person CPD and coaching, with a focus on creative, current, and student-centred geography teaching
