Universities: Get involved

We welcome all universities that feature a geography, or relevant, degree course as part of their academic teaching to be involved in the Ambassador scheme.

We are sorry to say that we currently have limited staff capacity to work on the Geography Ambassadors Programme and we are likely to now have a short pause in activity while we recruit the new colleagues to lead on this work. This means that for the coming few months, I’m afraid that we will not be able to facilitate Geography Ambassador visits or train any new Geography Ambassadors.

However, there are still ways that you can be involved in our work around careers and progression. If you are able to offer widening participation or Ambassador activities to schools via a university-led programme, please pass details of these to us at Ambassadors@rgs.org. We will push these details out to our networks to ensure schools are aware of what you are offering.

Benefits of the scheme

The Ambassador scheme has direct benefits for students who become part of the programme. Through developing their presentation, organisational and interpersonal skills, the role has a positive impact on the understanding of, and enthusiasm for, geography in the classroom.

In addition to this, the Ambassador scheme provides universities with a network of students who work with local schools and develop transferable skills to work in similar roles, such as speakers at university open days. We are keen to explore further how the Ambassador scheme can continue to provide additional benefits to universities through the network of students that we are building. Please do contact us on ambassadors@rgs.org to share your thoughts on this.

Get involved in running school/HEI partnership events

We would welcome the opportunity to work directly with you if there are schools your department/institution particularly would like to reach or if you are running other outreach or widening participation work.

In addition to this, we run young people-facing events, promoting geography at university and geography within careers. If you would be interested in finding out more, please do get in contact with us by emailing education@rgs.org.
