Hello from 2050

This section looks at what the climate might be like in different locations in 2050, and how places and people might adapt because of these climate changes

Key question

What is the climate like in 2050 and how have people adapted?

What is the climate like in 2050 and how have people adapted?

IPCC report of 2001 estimates for 2100:

  • Global surface temperature rise of 1.4C to .8 degrees C

  • Global mean sea level rise between 20cm to 88cm

Mitigation involves taking actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to enhance sinks aimed at reducing the extent of global warming. This is in distinction to adaptation to global warming which involves taking action to minimize the effects of global warming.

Starter

How can people and places adapt to a changing climate?

Use the extreme weather images from lesson one to discuss how people and places adapt.

What changes are already happening?

Main Activity

Review the future forecasts and impacts for each location.

Research your location using the web links on the location cards from lesson one to create a weather forecast from 2050.

This could be recorded and broadcast to your class.

Plenary

Take a vote - which one of the six locations will be the most vulnerable in 2050 and why?
