Developing a sense of place at Key Stage 3

Students are given cards with statements or questions about their local area to consider, and ideas are suggested for emotional mapping in which students can express their own personal geographies. Key Stage 3.

Costa Rica experiential fieldwork

A group of GCSE students from a school in London were taken on an experiential fieldtrip to Costa Rica. The aim of this trip was to experience a place in contrast to the area in which they live. This resource includes an article about the trip by the lead teacher, as well as a student's thoughts about her experiences. GCSE, AS/A2.

Qualitative fieldwork ideas

In this article, David Holmes, Geography Advisor to the Field Studies Council and Senior Examiner for Edexcel, makes the case for using qualitative techniques in geography fieldwork to encourage your students to engage in insightful geographical thinking. He also puts forward some ideas for qualitative studies, with suggestions for how data can be collected and analysed. Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 5.
