The Society’s spring programme of events offers a wide range of talks and discussions at venues across the UK, with many also livestreamed.
An exciting line-up of speakers is planned for our Monday night lectures series for members. In January, one of our grant recipients, Professor Niki Alsford, will outline his collaborative work with Haenyeo divers in Jeju Island, South Korea, and the importance of merging tradition with scientific data. Mike Parker, author of the bestselling classic, Map addict, will take us on a tour of our finest, favourite and oddest cartography in February while Professor Ed Hawkins will be speaking to our changing climate in March. The series culminates with a conversation between the Society’s Cartographic Collections Manager, Dr Katie Parker, and Professor Peter Frankopan on the meeting of geography, history and science.
We are also opening up our Collections again with our Be inspired series of afternoon talks, including a history of polar exploration in 50 objects as well as a talk from Dr Ed Armston-Sheret on his new book On the backs of others: rethinking the history of British geographical exploration.
Our variety of regional events in spring include a lecture in Belfast on art and architecture in the great gardens of the world, a guided walk of the Earth Photo exhibition in Dorset, and a chance to meet and hear from Fellows, Members and friends at the spring social in Chichester.
Now is the perfect time to join the Society and make the most of what’s on offer this spring. Membership includes access to our Monday night lectures, either in-person or online, and members also receive discounts on all other event ticket prices.
