Our Monday nights for Members return with an inspiring programme packed with renowned speakers covering climate change, world events, and much more. Highlights include Professor of Geology Sir Steve Sparks sharing his insights on volcanoes, leading journalists on geography and the news, and a topical panel discussion on the impact of melting glaciers. The programme culminates with Sir Michael Palin in conversation with award-winning television director Neil Ferguson on processes of change witnessed in countries featured in his recent documentary series. Don’t forget, you can make the most of what’s on offer this autumn by becoming a member. As well as free access to Monday night lectures, either in-person or online, members also receive discounts on all other event ticket prices.
We have an enriching programme of public events for you to enjoy. This includes a discussion on Islamic heritage in Britain, a reflection on Sally Orange MBE’s new film Everyone’s Everest, and the annual EGR Taylor lecture, which this year focuses on the unsung heroine of GPS. We’re opening the building to all this September with tours of Lowther Lodge – join expert Chrissie for a fascinating delve into the stories behind the objects on display.
Our regional events also continue: join Nick Crane on a tour of Britains’s secret footpaths, hear from Professor Richard Teeuw on the impacts of illegal gold mining in Colombia, and look back on three decades of Himalayan travel with Rebecca Stephens.
Later in autumn, our annual gathering of fieldwork and expeditions, Explore, turns 50. You’re invited to celebrate with us - discover what’s taking place. In December, we’re excited to see the return of Ice Station RGS! Similar in style to a museum late, you can expect an evening of storytelling, music and poetry.
