Green Careers Week takes place this week, 2-7 November. To celebrate, we’re sharing information on the value of green careers in today’s world and how studying geography can put young people on a pathway towards a green career, and offering a selection of free-to access resources for students and teachers interested in green careers.

According to Skills England, a green career is a job that helps the UK move towards a more sustainable, low‑carbon economy and achieve its net-zero emissions goals. These can be jobs that help protect the environment, tackle climate change, or use natural resources sustainably. The Office for National Statistics estimates that in just a decade, there has been a 27.8% increase in those employed in green jobs in the UK.

Studying geography provides students with excellent knowledge and skills that are key assets in green careers. Geographers have a deep understanding of global challenges like climate change, resource security and biodiversity loss, and are uniquely aware of how these challenges interconnect politically and to the economic landscape. Geographers are also critical thinkers, able to unpick, examine and deconstruct complex concepts. They are problem solvers, team players and excellent communicators – all essential attributes to a green career.

Dr Catherine Souch, the Society’s Director of Research, Education and Professional, said:

"From transitioning to renewable energy to preparing our infrastructure for extreme weather, green careers are key to meeting the climate challenges the world will continue to face. For students, studying geography is an excellent pathway to maximise the skills and knowledge necessary for green careers across many sectors. We are happy to celebrate Green Careers Week and proud to provide educational and professional support for green careers at every level, from students through to teachers, professionals and Chartered Geographers."
