Contribute to the direction of academic geography
We have over 30 Research Groups who help shape the direction of geography. They bring together researchers and those with a professional interest in a particular aspect of geography to support academic research and teaching in that area.
Coming up in August and September are the Research Groups’ next set of annual general meetings (AGMs). Plus if you’re a member of the academic community, we’re sharing how you can apply to join a Research Group committee.
Why are Research Group AGMs important?
AGMs provide an opportunity for Research Group committees to meet with current and prospective members, reflect on the previous year of activity, and map out future interventions to recognise and support the geography academic community.
Importantly, AGMs sustain the work of the groups, ensuring they are supported by a dedicated committee, and creating space for them to consider how they will help shape geography’s sub-disciplines in the upcoming year.
If you’re a member of the academic geography community and would like to become a member or learn more about a particular Research Group, you are more than welcome to attend an AGM. Some meetings will be hosted as hybrid events at this year’s Annual International Conference with others taking place online-only. If you’re not already attending this year’s conference, you can request a pass to attend an AGM in-person. Further details on when and where each group’s AGMs are taking place can be found on our website.
Committee positions now open
The election of new committee members is another key element of the AGMs. With committee positions now open, if you’re a researcher working in a sub-discipline of geography, you may also be interested in standing as a candidate for positions that are up for re-election.
By becoming a committee member, you’ll be able to contribute to the development of Research Groups, gain access to opportunities for professional development, and get involved in diverse networks beyond those available through your university or institution.

15 new geography programmes accredited
We have recently approved the accreditation of 15 geography programmes at four higher education institutions across the UK, bringing the total number of programmes accredited by the Society to 252.
