Across the world, significant inequalities exist in academic knowledge production between different countries, regions, and languages, shaping who can access and produce knowledge.

The Society's Latin American Geographies Research Group (LAG) has been exploring how to address these inequalities to raise the profile of geographical research being produced within Latin America, and to assist authors who work between Anglophone and Latin American geographies.

Led by the LAG Research Group’s founder and former Chair, Sam Halvorsen, we are pleased to announce the publication of the fourth Geography in the World collection in the Society’s flagship journal Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers: 'Towards Latin American Dialogues'.

'Towards Latin American Dialogues' brings together five papers by scholars based in Argentina, Brazil and Mexico, spotlighting contributions from the region rarely featured in mainstream international journals. The collection is introduced by a piece from Sam Halvorsen, Mariana Arzeno, John C. Finn, Juliana Nunes Rodriques, Matthew A. Richmond and Ann Varley, which reflects on the barriers to publishing in international journals.

Accompanying the collection is the launch of three guides for researchers working between Anglophone and Latin American geographies.

  • These guides provide a set of practical resources for Latin American scholars seeking to publish their work in English, and for Anglophone scholars working in this area.
  • The guides are available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, and were written by a collective from the Latin American Geographies Research Group.
