As part of their programme of activities dedicated to supporting geography academics undertaking research, across the UK and beyond, some of the Society’s 30+ Research Groups offer funding.

The Research Groups offer a range of schemes; from those that support the collecting of primary data, such as that offered by the Development Geographies Research Group, to those that help academics work with local partners, or attend conferences to share findings.

Some groups have developed grant schemes which provide targeted support for those who may face barriers to undertaking academic activity. The British Society for Geomorphology, for example, offer grants for individuals with caring responsibilities.

This funding helps geography’s sub-disciplines to thrive, supporting the production of new research whilst also helping individual academics to develop their careers.

Through these schemes, Research Groups also provide access to important networking and community building spaces. The Gender and Feminist Geographies Research Group and the Historical Geography Research Group both run grants to support conference attendance for postgraduates or those on a low-income.

Groups help researchers connect with broader communities, develop fresh perspectives, and demonstrate impact, which can, in turn, unlock further funding through programmes that support engagement with cultural institutions, such as that run by the History and Philosophy of Geography Research Group.

Who can apply for funding?

The funding schemes are typically open to researchers whose work aligns with the focus area of the relevant Research Group. Details of groups offering funding and the criteria for applications are available on our website, with information being added as new schemes are introduced. If you are a researcher working in a relevant area, do consider applying.

Please note that each group has their own process and deadline for applications.
