We are delighted to announce that the theme for the Society’s 2024 Annual International Conference is Mapping, and open the call for sessions, papers and posters.

Chosen by the conference chair, Professor Stephen Legg (University of Nottingham), the theme will explore mapping in all its forms in a world that is saturated with maps – from historical cartography to the newest technologies and digital practices.

Maps trace invasions, financial crises, pandemics and environmental disasters, and our responses to them. They plot and coordinate surveillance, and counter-plot evasion and resistance. They chart jet streams, oceanic oscillations and ozone holes, heatwaves, droughts and drizzles. Maps map territory and sovereignty, but also evidence indigenous land claims and historical landscapes of meaning.

The conference will take place in London, at both the Society and Imperial College London’s nearby South Kensington campus, and online, from the evening of Tuesday 27 to Friday 30 August 2024.

Guidance is available for prospective session organisers and presenters. We encourage you to consider the kinds of spaces and conversations you want to curate and how to best engage attendees in person and online.

The submissions portal will open by mid-November 2023, and the deadline for all submissions is Friday 1 March 2024
