How well do those of us who dream of exploration know the place we live? Global traveller Alastair Humphreys spent a year exploring his local map, a search for nearby nature and wildness that relied only upon curiosity and enthusiasm.

About our speaker

Alastair Humphreys is a British adventurer and author. He spent over four years cycling around the world, a journey of 46,000 miles through 60 countries and five continents. More recently Alastair has walked across southern India, rowed across the Atlantic Ocean, run six marathons through the Sahara desert, completed a crossing of Iceland, busked through Spain and participated in an expedition in the Arctic, close to the magnetic North Pole. He has trekked 1000 miles across the Empty Quarter desert and 120 miles round the M25 – one of his pioneering microadventures. He was named as one of National Geographic’s Adventurers of the year for 2012. 
In 2023, the Royal Geographical Society gave Alastair the Ness Award for his long-standing contributions to promoting a greater understanding of our world and wider public engagement with the outdoors. Alastair has written 15 books and is a patron of several charities.

  • Monday night lectures are open to Fellows and Members and are included in the cost of membership.

  • Monday night lectures are held in person in the Ondaatje Theatre and the bar will be open in the Map Room before and after the lecture. Please be advised all payments are card only.

  • All Fellows and Members wanting to attend in person must pre-book a free ticket.

  • All Monday night lectures are livestreamed via our website so you can watch them from wherever you are.
