From plastic bottles to microplastic pellets (nurdles), plastics are ubiquitous in our lives and as pollution in the environment. This talk will explore both the grassroots and governmental strategies being employed to tackle this global challenge. From citizen science initiatives that empower individuals to take action, to the pivotal role of government legislation in enacting systemic change, learn about the multifaceted approach required to mitigate plastic pollution.
About the speakers
The speakers for this event are members of the UK and Ireland Spill Association's Plastic Pollution Working Group (PPWG). In 2020 the Plastic Pollution Working Group (PPWG) was formed to include a number of the UK&Eire Spill Association's members to understand and tackle plastic pollution in the environment. As more and more plastic pollution incidents have occurred in recent years, this group has created a response plan that involves incident triage and safe systems of work. As well as, undertaken trials of recovery equipment in conjunction with academia such that a response to these spills could be safely and quickly executed, to then share this knowledge with others.

This event will be held at the National Oceanography Centre, European Way, Southampton, SO14 3ZH.
The NOC is accessible on foot or by cycle.
By bus, UniLink Bus Service: The U1C to Dock Gate 4 starts at Southampton City Airport and travels directly to NOCS. The U1A to Southampton City Airport starts at NOCS, for Southampton Central Station alight at Asda.
By car follow signs to Dock Gate 4 and the Waterfront for approximately 6 miles. There is visitor parking at the NOC directly outside the front entrance. However, spaces can be very limited.
