Sustainable aviation: reducing the climate impact - Dr Andy Jefferson

Solving aviation’s climate impact is a complex problem. Whilst plans to achieve net zero emission by 2050 are in place, delivery is now the focus. Recognising growing scientific certainty about aviation’s full impact on the climate necessitates refining and optimising activities and scaling up innovative solutions.

The challenge is doing this whilst aviation is anticipated to experience a 4% per annum growth in demand. Solutions require a careful mix of investment alongside policy and investment-risk support from governments, balanced against expectations of the public, scientists, environmentalists and wider civil society.

With aviation operating globally, delivering this also requires overcoming differing geo-political approaches and wider socio-economic barriers between countries.

Geographers’ perspectives can enlighten the path to remove such hurdles using a ‘system of systems’ approach, to guide others through this challenge.

About the speaker

Dr Andy Jefferson has over 30 years’ experience in tackling strategic and operational challenges across the UK aviation industry in stepping up and adapting to the sustainability challenges. He co-founded A&G Jefferson in 2012, operating from East Anglia, working with companies large and small, from innovators to multinationals.

A Fellow of the Society, he is passionate about promoting multi-stakeholder collaboration to secure a sustainable future.
