Teaching and Scholarship Forum (TeaS)

The Teaching and Scholarship Forum (TeaS) is an online collaborative space run by the Geography and Education Research Group (GeogEd), in partnership with the Society, providing opportunities for meeting, sharing, collating, and supporting teaching and scholarship in higher education.

The forum provides an informal but regular meeting place for HE staff at all career stages and primarily focuses on teaching and scholarship within geography and related disciplines by providing support, advice, encouragement, and resources. Periodically, associated resources shared via the forum will be shared on this page.

With more institutions focusing on teaching and scholarship (or teaching and education) career pathways, the TeaS forum is intended to be an inclusive and supportive network of colleagues that speaks to the challenges and opportunities such a career path provides. Meet-ups are structured around community needs, as well as featuring guest contributors to discuss or advise upon key aspects such as promotion, building a national profile, and pedagogic research.

Online meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month, at 2.00pm-3.00pm.

Writing and pedagogy (16 March 2022)

Dr Ruth Healey (University of Chester) shares some of her insights into pedagogic research and writing and publishing within the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). Ruth refers to an open access book entitled 'Writing about Learning and Teaching in Higher Education' which can be downloaded here.

Building collaborative clusters (16 February 2022)

A discussion of key themes of interest to the community, including professional recognition, mentoring and promotion on the T&L pathway. Opportunities to develop self-organising collaborations that exist beyond the TeaS forum were also discussed.

Professional recognition (19 January 2022)

Dr Naomi Holmes (SFHEA) and Prof. Nicola Thomas (PFHEA) share their journeys to gaining their Senior and Principal Fellowships of the Higher Education Academy. Both offer reflections on why they chose to pursue fellowship, first-hand insight into the process involved, and valuable advice on how to view and frame your experiences when writing an application.

The Advance HE website provides further information and guidance about how to apply for fellowship, including by direct application or completion of an HEA-accredited programme. If you are unsure which category of fellowship is right for you, the Fellowship Category Tool can help by guiding you through a set of statements that are aligned to the UK Professional Standards Framework (UK PSF) and recommending a route to fellowship.

Scholarship and me (15 December 2021)

Dr Hannah Mathers (University of Glasgow), Dr Matt Finn (University of Exeter), and Dr Lynda Yorke (Bangor University) share their scholarly activities and thoughts on scholarship.

Promotion in teaching and scholarship in HE geography (17 November 2021)

Prof. Jennifer Hill (University of Gloucestershire) shares her experience of achieving promotion on the teaching and scholarship pathway. The session explores what roles such as 'Associate Professor', 'Professor' and 'Senior Professor' can look like in a teaching and scholarship setting, and offers advice for how to make sense of and plan for application processes.
