Mount Everest and beyond: looking back on three decades of Himalayan travel and exploration - Rebecca Stephens

Join the first British woman to climb Mount Everest and the Seven Summits as she considers how the increase in independent and organised travel to the Himalaya has impacted its peoples and its environment.

On 17 May 1993, Rebecca Stephens became the first British woman to climb Everest and was awarded an MBE for her achievement. The following year she went on to become the first British woman to scale the Seven Summits, the highest mountain on each of the seven continents.

Since then, Rebecca has dedicated her career to the Himalaya and the world's mountains – through her work as a trustee of the Himalayan Trust UK and Chair of the Mount Everest Foundation. She continues to travel widely across the Himalaya, leading small group tours to Ladakh, Bhutan, Tibet and Nepal.

In this illustrated talk, Rebecca will use her first hand experience to share the opportunities and challenges facing the Himalaya today.

• Tickets are £8 (£10 on the door, cash only), and free for Society members. Students can book free tickets by entering the code Student at checkout. Please book by midday on 25 November.
• We do not issue tickets (electronic or physical) for this event. Instead your name will be on a list at the door.
